Reading Childrens Books

Building Strong Family Foundations One Children’s Book at a Time

As we all know, family connections and togetherness are the foundation of a healthy happy childhood.

One of our favorite ways to connect with our own children at the end of the day when the hustle and bustle is done is with a good book. When you read with your child you’re sharing a story, a teaching moment, but really…you’re showing them they are loved.

A few of our favorite children’s books for little ones…

The Rabbit Listened by Cori Doerrfeld

The Rabbit Listened focuses on the importance of listening and validating emotions without immediately offering solutions. It can help children understand that it’s okay to feel upset, and that sometimes, simply having someone just listen is the most important part of healing.

This story beautifully illustrates how people react to distress in different ways, and there’s no “one right way” to cope. The various animals in the book each offer a different reaction to the main character’s feelings, from trying to fix the problem to ignoring it. Ultimately, it is the rabbit listening and providing a safe space to feel that allows the recovery from the fallen castle to begin.

What Do You Do with a Problem? by Kobi Yamada

What Do You Do with a Problem? helps children view problems not as insurmountable obstacles, but as opportunities for growth. Throughout the story, it demonstrates that dealing with problems often takes time and patience. It reassures children that facing problems head-on isn’t always easy or quick, but it’s a process that requires perseverance to resolve big problems.

The story follows a child’s journey as they face a problem that causes fear and uncertainty. Throughout, the text highlights the importance of acknowledging feelings about the problem, which can be an essential part of emotional regulation. For children learning to identify and express their emotions, What Do You Do with a Problem? offers a gentle way to understand how to sit with and process difficult feelings before moving toward resolution.

I Am Peace by Susan Verde

I Am Peace encourages children to slow down, breathe, and be present in the moment — all central components of mindfulness. Alongside its beautiful illustrations, this book offers a simple yet effective way for children to understand how to calm their minds and be aware of their feelings.

For children dealing with anxiety, stress, or overwhelming emotions, I Am Peace offers a soothing and comforting approach to practicing emotional regulation. It illustrates how taking deep breaths and focusing on the present moment can help reduce anxiety. The author encourages self-compassion by showing it’s okay to feel upset, but then adds the process of emotional regulation. Together, it brings a sense of peace by learning how to accept and understand one’s emotions.
